Stem Cell

What is Stem Cell?

Our bodies are made of more than 200 different types of cells such as liver cells, fat cells, nerve cells, skin cells etc. But a skin cell cannot become a liver cell and vice versa. Stem cells are the foundation cells for every organ, tissue and cell in the body. They are like a blank microchip that can ultimately be programmed to perform any number of specialized tasks. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that do not yet have a specific function. Under proper conditions, stem cells begin to develop into specialized cells. Additionally, stem cells are self-sustaining and can replicate themselves for long periods of time.

All stem cells, regardless of their source, have three general properties:
1) They are capable of dividing and renewing themselves for long periods,
2) They are unspecialized,
3) They can give rise to specialized cell types.

Where You Find Stem Cell?

Adult Stem cells can be found in various tissue including Bone marrow, Peripheral blood, Brain, Blood vessels, Skeletal muscle, Skin, Teeth, Heart, Gut, Liver, Ovarian epithelium, Testis, umbilical cord, cord blood etc.
While as embryonic stem cells are found from inner cell mass of blastocyst (5 days of embryo) of the embryo and fetal stem cells are derived from organs of the fetus.

How It Works?

It is believed that stem cells are attracted to the injured tissue either by releasing of specific chemical from the tissue or by stimulation of specific chemical from the brain in response to injury to the tissue., Stem cells home at the site of injury and change into same type of cells as homing tissue due to their plasticity. They engraft with the tissue and grow to repair the damage.

Why Stem Cell?

If the disease process is too rapid and massive or stem cells may not be able to reach target organ in sufficient quantity, the treatment by stem cell therapy is recommend.
